About the reference identity
Three residues from a longer hormone
KPV is shorthand for Lys-Pro-Val: lysine, proline and valine, joined in that order. Chemical records also index it as MSH (11-13), because the same three residues form the final positions of the 13-residue alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone sequence. A short fragment and the full-length hormone are distinct molecular references.
