About the reference identity
A tripeptide with a distinctive connection
Glutathione joins glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. Its first peptide linkage uses glutamate's side-chain carboxyl group rather than the usual backbone connection, which is why the notation often begins with gamma-glutamyl. Reduced glutathione and glutathione disulfide have different chemical records; the name and chemical form both matter when reading a report.
